Introduction to Woodhaven
Students will view and interact with two sets of maps and primary resources focused on the development of Woodhaven, Queens. Students will create T-charts, write observations, and discuss findings in small groups or virtual breakout rooms. Following discussion, students will have the opportunity to create their map of Woodhaven with locations significant to them.
LESSON PLAN #2
Impact of the Lalance & Grosjean Factory
Students will view and interact with a set of primary and secondary resources focused on the former Lalance & Grosjean tinware factory and its impact on the development of Woodhaven, Queens. Following a discussion of the factory and student observations on provided resources, students will synthesize historical knowledge by creating a newspaper or hiring advertisements for the Lalance & Grojean factory.
LESSON PLAN #3
The Subway Comes to Woodhaven
Students will view and interact with two newspaper articles focused on discussing the Subway or Elevated (“L”) coming to the neighborhood of Woodhaven, Queens. In groups, the students will write and share observations on why the community had different stances on the impact the subway or elevated will have on the neighborhood. Student groups will then discuss their observations with the class. In the second portion of the activity, student groups will hold a mock debate about the advantages and disadvantages of either having a subway or an elevated line come to Woodhaven.
